The Case:
Seiko Prospex Captain Willard SPB237J1 Automatic Brown Strap Mens is a modern reinterpretation of the watch worn by Martin Sheen’s character in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 Vietnam War epic, Apocalypse Now. This model has also been released in celebration of Japanese explorer Naomi Uemura’s birthday. He was the first man to climb the highest peaks of each of the 5 continents, during which he wore a Seiko.
The case measures 42.7mm in width and it is made from satin brushed stainless steel case has been finished with super hard coating, which provides the watch with unparalleled durability and scratch resistance. A black unidirectional bezel sits on top of the case, it displays a 60-minute scale and it features knurled edges that allow the wearer to easily rotate it. The bevelled sapphire crystal embedded in the case provides the watch with superlative scratch resistance. The glass has been treated an anti-reflective coating, which permits for optimum readability. On the back of the case, there is a screw down case back which provides greater protection against water.
The Dial:
The unique textured grey dial is based on the mountain surfaces that Naomi would have endured during his groundbreaking expeditions. The dial employs a simplistic layout which ensures the dial can be easily read. It consists of deeply applied square hour markers that have been polished and filled with a luminescent material, which allows the dial to be read in the dark. A beveled baton-shaped hands occupies the centre of the dial, it has also been filled with LumiBrite material. The design of the dial continues to pays homage to the original Seiko 6105 through the adoption of the distinctive ‘traffic light’ style second hand. A date display window is placed between the 4 and 5 o'clock marker.
The Strap:
The watch comes on NATO-style nylon strap that is stylised in brown, which bestows the watch with a utilitarian feel. These are indeed made in the same way as “obijime,” the decorative cord that holds a Kimono sash in its place. According to Seiko, these “straps present a uniquely Japanese aesthetic and texture and are specially manufactured to have a tensile strength nearly four times that of regular Seiko fabric straps.” It fastens easily using a standard buckle. The Seiko logo is present on the clasp too.
The Functions:
6R35 caliber automatic movement powers this timepiece, it also offers hacking and hand winding. Hacking is a function where the second hand stops once the crown is pulled out, allowing for precise timing once the crown is pushed in. The movement allows for a hand winding feature which by turning the crown, gives power to the watch. This 24 jewel movement offers an astounding 70 hour power reserve, as well as an accuracy of +25 to -15 seconds per day. Also, it has a water resistance of 200 metres.
