Background:
Since the 2014 release of the sci-fi blockbuster, Interstellar, watch enthusiasts have beckoned for Hamilton to recreate the Khaki Field H70605731 watch that stars in the film. Only 10 models were produced for the film and all but one, that was given away, were returned to Hamilton after filming.
In the film, the watch first belongs to Joseph Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), who is an astronaut entrusted with finding a new planet to sustain human life. Before he sets out on his mission he gives his daughter, Murph, his Hamilton watch. Perhaps the purpose of this act is to show the sentimental value a watch holds.
The Case:
The ‘Murph’ comes in a 42mm-wide brushed steel case, with a thickness of just 11mm. This is accentuated by the 22mm lugs that hug the wrist. It features a manual winding crown, with a hacking feature which allows the wearer to stop the movement at their will. An additional touch of class is the embossed ‘H’ logo on the crown. A striking feature is the integrated polished bezel, which contrasts perfectly with the rest of the brushed steel design.
The Bracelet:
The watch’s bracelet is particularly classy, made from calf leather. The inside of the strap is embossed with the ‘Hamilton’ logo, which is a meaningful personal touch, as only the wearer will see this. The brushed steel buckle similarly features the logo. The thick leather strap emits sophistication, and despite being a field watch this model could even be worn as a dress watch.
The Dial:
The cathedral styled hands, or for means of a better phrase the beige poire squelette-style, are a unique touch, which sets it apart from the rest. The arabic style indices are also coated in a vintage beige coloured Super-LumiNova. When the watch is worn in the dark it will light up, ensuring easy visibility.
The logo, as well as ‘Swiss Made’ and ‘Khaki Automatic’ can be found on the dial. This helps give off a vintage feel to the watch. The most impressive feature of the watch is so subtle that you may even need a loupe to see it. On the long sleek second hands ‘Eureka’ is written in morse code. This feature illustrates to the wearer the craftsmanship that has gone into making this watch. It is also a real lure for film-buffs!
The Movement:
The ‘Murph’ also features Hamilton’s H-10 produced movement. This mechanism is made by the Swatch company, where it is laser regulated. It is also found in Tissot watches too. It is one of the most attractive features of this watch, as it offers an astounding 80 power reserve. Comparatively, a standard mechanical watch will hold time for around 40 hours. It operates at a rate of 21,600 v/p/h which is why the watch is able to boats such impressive power reserves, because it is easier on the gears. It consists of 25 jewels and you can expect to loose or gain around 3 seconds a day.
Finally, his watch has a water resistance rating of 100 metres, making it suitable for swimming and snorkelling.
