The brand’s history began in 1937, when the Lammfromm family fled from Nazi Germany and settled in Portland, Oregon. They purchased a small hat manufacturer, naming it the Columbia Hat Company. The company was eventually passed down to Neal Boyle, the husband of Gert Boyle who’s father it was who started the company. Gert Boyle eventually assumed control of the company in 1970, following Neal Boyle’s sudden passing. She soon earned herself a reputation as the ‘Tough Mother’ of the company due to the high standards to which she held herself and others. These standards still guide the company today.
