VICTORINOX history
Victorinox was founded in 1884 when Karl Elsener opened a cutler’s workshop in Ibach-Schwyz, Switzerland. By 1897, the “Original Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife” was patented, later becoming known worldwide as the Swiss Army Knife™. In 1909 the company adopted the name “Victorinox,” a combination of Elsener’s mother’s name, Victoria, and “Inox,” referring to stainless steel, while also registering the now-iconic Cross & Shield emblem. Over the decades, leadership passed through generations of the Elsener family, with Carl Elsener II modernizing production in the early 20th century and Carl Elsener III guiding international expansion after World War II, when Victorinox products became popular among U.S. soldiers stationed in Europe.
From the late 20th century onward, Victorinox evolved into a global brand spanning multiple categories. Highlights include the Swiss Army Knife™ being added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1977, entry into the North American watch market in 1989, the establishment of charitable foundations in the 1990s, and expansion into travel gear, fragrances, and timepieces. In 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger SA, further strengthening its position, and in 2007 leadership passed to Carl Elsener IV. In recent years the company has opened flagship stores, built a Watch Competence Center in Delémont, and celebrated the production of its 500-millionth Swiss Army Knife™. Today, more than 140 years after its founding, Victorinox stands as a global symbol of quality, durability, and Swiss innovation.
