About seiko Watches

Why seiko?

Seiko has an unusually broad approach to everyday watchmaking.

That means everything from straightforward quartz and chronograph watches in the Seiko Essentials collection to the familiar automatic simplicity of Seiko 5 Classic, alongside lightweight titanium models and more traditional steel bracelet designs.

The movements and materials may differ, but the idea is consistent: practical watches, made with a strong focus on reliability, function and long-term everyday use.

about seiko watches

The Seiko Story

Seiko began in 1881, when 21-year-old Kintaro Hattori opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in Tokyo.

He established the Seikosha factory in 1892, beginning Seiko’s move into manufacturing, and in 1913 produced the Laurel, Japan’s first wristwatch. The Seiko name itself first appeared on a wristwatch in 1924.

That history eventually led to collections such as Seiko 5, first introduced in 1963 as an accessible automatic watch built around five practical principles including automatic winding, day-date display and durability.

Pioneering Watchmaking

Seiko’s influence reaches well beyond the watches in its current collection.

In 1969 it introduced the Quartz Astron, the world’s first commercially available quartz wristwatch, helping establish the technology that would transform everyday timekeeping around the world. Seiko later opened key quartz patents, allowing the system to become widely adopted across the industry.

That willingness to develop different ways of making a watch is still visible in the Seiko range today. Quartz sits comfortably alongside automatic movements, while materials such as titanium bring another practical option to familiar everyday designs.

Seiko has never needed every watch to work in the same way. The focus has always been on choosing the technology that makes sense for the watch.
