A Legend Reborn – From the Seiko SKX to the Seiko 5 Sports SSK

A blog documenting WatchNation’s relationship with Seiko and the 5 Sports GMT…

Our story with Seiko began in the Grand Seiko boutique, in Knightsbridge, London – one of the world’s most luxurious shopping districts. The after-effects of this meeting are still felt throughout WatchNation on a daily basis, as it marked the beginning of a long and lasting relationship with Seiko that has seen us become one of the most trusted retailers of the brand in the world.

Founded by Kinatro Hattori in 1881 in Ginza, Japan, Seiko has established itself as one of the world’s-leading brands and in-house manufacturers, having been responsible for many ‘firsts’ in the watch industry. It was therefore an honour to have been directly entrusted by the brand with the U.K. exclusivity of the SKX diver’s collection, which has a reputation for being one of the most iconic dive watches ever-produced, arguably up there with the Rolex Submariner.

Having lived and breathed everything that Seiko has offered us over the last few years, we have established a team of experts that are driven by their own passions for the brand. Our infatuation and appreciation has since been acknowledged by Seiko’s head office in Japan, which has seen us be continually commended with exclusives.

Since discontinuing the SKX in 2019, we have become one of the last few official stockists of the collection that we owe so much too. It is a part of a proud lineage of Seiko dive watches that have inspired generations of watch and dive enthusiasts alike. Which has left the question on the tongues of many, what’s next?

Seiko’s hottest and most recent release, the Seiko 5 Sports GMT SKK are housed in a 42.5mm stainless steel case and presented on a jubilee bracelet, offering the same solid construction and simple everyday wearability that made the SKX one of the most popular dive watches on the market. Equipped with the latest 4R34 automatic calibre movement, a GMT function and a 24-hour rotating bezel, the SSK marks a new chapter in Seiko’s legacy.

The SSK will be initially launched in three different variants, the SSK001 with a black sunburst dial and a black and grey bezel. The SSK003 with a blue sunburst dial, black and blue batman-style bezel. And finally the SSK005, features an orange dial, with a black and grey bezel. It will be exclusively sold in the U.K. by us here at WatchNation, which fills us with immense pride given the hype surrounding this release and it also marks another monumental event in our relationship with Seiko.
