Measuring in at 45mm in diameter, the case of this 55th anniversary timepiece maintains many of the same design codes of the original 6159, such as the monoblock construction. This is to ensure water resistance, rigidity and protection for the movement. The monoblock case is crafted out of Seiko’s “Ever-Brilliant Steel,” which is a watch industry first. This is the world’s most corrosion resistant steel, it is 1.7 times higher than that of the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. It is only normally used in the marine industry, making it the perfect material for a dive watch.

However, it is not just the “Ever-Brilliant Steel” that underscores the brilliance of this modern reiteration, the case has also been finished using Zaratsu polishing. This finishing technique is only achievable through use of a specific machine and the expert skills of the craftsmen who mastered its application. This gives the case its sharp edges and mirror like finish.

A glossy, metallic unidirectional bezel, that has been treated to a Lumibrite coating, sits on top of the case. The knurled bezel allows the wearer to easily rotate it, to measure their diving time and compression. Dual-curved sapphire crystal glass also sits on top of the case, it has also been finished with an anti-reflective coating. The result of this is a high quality lens like appearance, which gives the dial unparalleled levels of sharpness and clarity. Another feature belonging to the original model that has been retained is the screw down crown that is positioned at the 4 o’clock mark.

The Dial:

All of the three re-creation models features the same blue-grey dial that reflects the beauty of the sea. While also hints at their ability to perform at depths which dim the intensity of the oceans’ blue. The subtle gradation of the dial colour dramatises the way that light gradually fades as one dives deeper into the dark, mysterious world of the ocean.

The overall design and layout of the dial remains true to the original model, with some exceptions. For example, the style of arrow pointed hands remains the same. Although the hands of this modern rendition have been bevelled, which is another design feature that underscores the craftsmanship. Also, the hands and indexes are now silver as opposed to gilded, which provides the watch with a modern feel. Both the hands and indexes are applied and have been filled with Lumibrite. A date window replaces the 3 o’clock marker. The beveled frame illustrates the precise execution the is present all the way through the design of this watch. Depth is bestowed on the dial through the layered design of the chapter ring and the dial wall.

The Strap:

The strap pays homage to the original model, while being modern in both the material used and their colour. The silicone strap bears the same pyramidical pattern as its predecessor, which gives it an authentic feel. It is also a great choice of material for a dive watch, because it is highly durable, water proof and easy to adjust so it can fit around a wetsuit.

The Functions:

Seiko’s 8L35 calibre movement powers this model. It is a self winding movement that offers a 50 hour power reserve and an accuracy rating of +15 to -10 seconds per day when fully charged. It is a hi-beat calibre of movement that is commonly found in Grand Seiko models. This model is a saturation diver’s watch, so it offers a water resistance rating of 300 metres.

If you have any questions please click here

Click here to join our facebook and Instagram!
