Seiko Limited Edition Diver’s Prospex Black Series ‘Sumo’ SSC761J1

Seiko limited edition diver’s prospex black series. The tropical seas show many expressions as the sun sets, changing its color from a cobalt-blue to a dark jet-black wrapped in the silence of the night. The mystical charm of the sea at night makes night diving a sought-after activity for those fascinated by the contrasting appeal from the sea at daytime. Today, a series of all-black diver’s watches inspired by the dramatic and mysterious world of the nighttime ocean is born.

From the Prospex diver’s watch comes a model that combines the practical functions of a wristwatch with the waterproof functions of air diving. It is part of the Black series, of which more information can be found here. This model in particular has a limited number of just 3,500 which is serialized on the case back. The impressionable orange accent of its design also make these watches perfect for daily use. Black hard-coating is applied to the stainless steel case of the watch whose design has long been popular amongst wearers by the nickname “SUMO.” The orange of the minute hand echoes the light flashed in the dark sea by the night divers which allows for the exact time to be read under dark conditions. Finally, a black silicone strap which has an accordian style can be fastened using a standard buckle.

Seiko’s unique Lumibrite ensures legibility in the dark world of the night sea. The watch’s markers are applied a special Lumibrite in the same orange color. The watches are water-resistant to 200 meters and has a screw-down crown to ensure the safety of the divers from any accidental operations. This model in particular is powered by one of Seiko’s best movements, the solar V192. The watch is powered by the suns rays which allows for an incredible accuracy of +-15 seconds per month. The dial features three subdials which have a variety of uses. The dial at three o’clock acts as a 24 hour display with the dial at 6 o’clock displaying the seconds. Also, the subdial at nine o’clock is a chronograph, perfect for measuring a run in the park or timing a nightime dive. The bezel is unidirectional which prevents any knocks from any scuba equipment. The movement also has a overcharge prevention which prolongs the life of the watch.

The Brand: Seiko

Seiko’s 135-year history has been marked by a ceaseless determination to innovate in every aspect of the watchmaker’s art. By embracing this ethos, Seiko has been responsible for a string of industry-leading advances in the technology of time. Notably, the creation of the world’s first quartz watch in 1969. Or equally impressive the creation of the world’s first TV watch in 1982. And even more relevant today, with our abhorrent use of non-renewable energy sources, Seiko’s Kinetic. This watch had the ability to generate its own power from the movement of the wearer, it was released in 1988. The listed technological developments serve as evidence to illustrate the revolutionary impact which Seiko has had on the watchmaking world. They are also remarkably unique in that they manufacture every aspect of every watch in-house. They even grow their own quartz crystals and sapphires, hence why Seiko are renowned for being watchmaking experts.
