Seiko 5 Sports Brian May X Limited Edition “Red Special” Black Military Strap Guitar Watch SRPE83K1

Since Seiko made its first diving watch in 1965, Seiko has been exceeding the expectations of those whose sports require watches with truly professional specifications. Drawing from Seiko’s roots, a ‘Sumo’ series has become popular among Seiko fanatics. Sumo wrestling is the national sport of Japan. Once patronized by the emperors, Sumo’s origins go back at least 1,500 years, making it the world’s oldest organized sport. In its long history sumo has gone through many changes and many of the rituals that go along the sport that seem old were in fact conceived in the 20th century. The piece is so named due to its big and thick case style resembling that of a wrestler.

The Seiko Brian May Limited Edition SRPE83K1 is part of the iconic Seiko 5 Sports family, with only 9,000 pieces being produced with this limited piece they will surely be in high demand. The watch design itself is inspired by Brian Mays “RedSpecial” guitar it’s the guitar that made the band Queen one of the most loved bands in the world, the actual guitar itself was built by hand by Brian and his father in the early 1960’s the guitar holds a special place in Brian’s heart! It was actually carved from wood of an old fireplace, the body is made from blockboard with an ancient oak insert and covered with mahogany veneer which Brain stained and polished himself. Just like the guitar Brian has admitted to relying on Seiko watches for the best part of 40 years and was often seen sporting a Seiko diver watch in his Queen days, he purchased his first Seiko in Japan whilst touring with Queen in the 1970’s. The watch itself boasts the echoes of his beloved “RedSpecial” Guitar with the same red and black theme, it features the guitar silhouette on the left-hand side with a wood grain effect pattern throughout the red part of the dial. The iconic name “Red Special” text has been added to the dial at 6 o’clock position of the dial making this a truly unique piece.

With a caliber 4R36 automatic 24 jewel movement which promises 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of a healthy 41 hours. The hands and indexes have a Lumbrite coating making them visible in the dark which are housed beneath a hardlex crystal glass that are all surrounded by a stainless steel case. The watch comes fitted with a black nylon military strap. The Japanese made movement can be seen through the back of the case which also features the signature of Brain May himself, The watch is presented in a one of a kind of the “RedSpecial” flight case which Brain May used throughout his career the box also features a coin based sixpenny piece which he used as a plectrum for many years.

Seiko 5 Sports:

The Seiko 5 family has set the standard in affordable, rugged and stylish watches since 1963. Designed to be simple but serious, the Seiko 5 is so-called due to its five key attributes: automatic winding, displaying the day and date in a single window, water resistance, a recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position and a durable metal bracelet. Released in order to meet the demands of the revolutionary baby-boomer generation, the Seiko 5 collection is just as popular to this day, proof that expert craftsmanship and elegant design will never go out of fashion.

The Brand: Seiko

Seiko’s 135-year history has been marked by a ceaseless determination to innovate in every aspect of the watchmaker’s art. By embracing this ethos, Seiko has been responsible for a string of industry-leading advances in the technology of time. Notably, the creation of the world’s first quartz watch in 1969. Or equally impressive the creation of the world’s first TV watch in 1982. And even more relevant today, with our abhorrent use of non-renewable energy sources, Seiko’s Kinetic. This watch had the ability to generate its own power from the movement of the wearer, it was released in 1988. The listed technological developments serve as evidence to illustrate the revolutionary impact which Seiko has had on the watchmaking world. They are also remarkably unique in that they manufacture every aspect of every watch in-house. They even grow their own quartz crystals and sapphires, hence why Seiko are renowned for being watchmaking experts.
